All my images from the Judgement of Paris series are made by drawing an under painting (that is the initial painting) in acrylic. Then scanning the under painting into my computer and using the image to design a graphic that works in harmony with the painting. I proceed to print the graphic onto the painting and voila! Some of them are a little more worked (this one for example has been printed on, then washed in cold water, left to dry and printed on again) to give them a more aged quality.

The playoff in the series is between old and new. The painting uses old fashioned methods of depicting a scene (that is selected from the story – in italics) and is drawn with a specific image of the story in mind (like a sketch for a film storyboard). Yet they are done in a modern and abstract way (that I would imagine only I can understand – if you look and think, you may see what the paintings are of, as they are supposed to resemble things). The graphic shows modern re-interpretations of the scene – morals that can be modernised to apply to 21st century life, occurrences that reflect events or aspects of modern society and contemporary interpretations of key phrases or words that relate to the feel of the square in question.

The project is all about transforming old and new ideas, lessons, events, words and techniques until everything merges into one – the old story with the new ideas and the old making processes (paint) with modern computerised methods. Everything fuses together and (hopefully) is evident in every image in the set.
